Welcome to 2002!
Jan 01, 2002 RaveZero

I'm shocked we've made it thus far, but here's looking forward to another year! On behalf of the whole Steelcommand.com crew (Mil-Net, The Dropship, etc...) I bid you a happy new year!

Tip of the Week #3 and #4
Jan 04, 2002 RaveZero

To make up for the lack of TotW last week, I'm posting two this week. Enjoy!

Tip of the Week #3 from Patrick A. Faries:

While bigger, more expensive units are good for certain tactics, they aren’t always the best choice. They can be good for defensive situations and protecting a slower target, but they are not very good in a running assault while outnumbered.

To read the whole Tip, click here!

Next comes the quick Tip of the Week #4 from Nadin Brzezinski:

When playing around a table, DO NOT touch soembody else's minaitures unless you have thier permission. You have no idea how many times I have seen that done, and people just [scream]!

Thanks, Nadin. I know I've had more than a few minuatures get damaged from that -- I feel your pain!

This Just In...
Jan 15, 2002 RaveZero

If you can read this consider yourself fortunate. Our host's service provider's network issues have been haunting us for about four days now, and as you can see it's taking a while to resolve.

DSL.net's service representative assures us that a complete resolution is at hand, however. Thanks for your patience.

Note that email is also down for us, so if you've sent us something expect a response as soon as things are running smoothly again.

Knight in 3D
Jan 16, 2002 RaveZero

John Bear Ross from Hellion Productions sent his latest creation our way. Check out the excellent CAD version of the Hughes-Marietta Knight.

One thing to note about the Knight is the design similarities between it and the Warlord, which it shares direct and indirect missile packs with.

Updates and Upcoming
Jan 16, 2002 RaveZero

I've updated the Digital CAV page with the latest revised images of the Tsuiseki, Fenri, and Warlord. Also, images of the Knight (four of them) have been added to the page as well.

I've got last week's Tip of the Week on the way, but as always please send in your own tips. I'd like to have a good supply to keep the feature going, and hopefully I'll have another soon for this week.

Also, I'll be moving the Journal of Recognition preview images from the Digital CAV page to a new Analog CAV page in the near future. Analog CAV will feature hand-drawn artwork from both Reaper and fans alike. We should also have a semi-automated miniature gallery online soon similar to the one found on Freefall's Memory Core.

Finally, we are always accepting submissions for CAV fiction, artwork, miniatures, etc. Battle reports, convention or demo photographs, you name it. It's all about content! If you have something to contribute to the CAV community don't hesitate to contact us. We want Mil-Net to be the best site for fans of the game as we can, but it's only possible with your support.

Cheap Trees Are Back
Jan 20, 2002 Chrome

I came across this at Miniature Gamers in their news. War Zone Terrain has announced the return of their Cheap Trees terrain pack. At 2 - 2.5 inches tall, these trees will work great with CAV, and as the name says, are very cheap!

Check them out at War Zone's online store.

Tip of the Week #5
Jan 21, 2002 RaveZero

Last week's Tip of the Week (yep, we're a bit behind) is brought to you by Quester from RuneSmith Studio:

The Rolling Box

Ever notice how rolling dice on an open table can yield disastrous results -- losing dice, knocking over miniatures or terrain, mixing in with your marker die? Try keeping a "rolling-box" handy. I have a rolling-box made of clear plastic that you can set near the action and rolling no longer interferes with the game or the terrain.

To make my box I had a few pieces of plexiglass cut at the hardware store: four 6"x4" pieces and one 6 1/8"x6 1/8" piece and glues them together. All told it cost approximately $5.00 (US). Of course, any box will do. For example, try using the lid to a game or puzzle box.

Thanks for the tip, Quester!

GAMA Survey
Jan 26, 2002 RaveZero

GAMA (the guys and gals that run the gaming trade show/convention in Las Vegas every year) needs your help in a survey they've asked a few sites to participate in. Unfortunately Mil-Net currently doesn't have a good method in place for surveys, polls and the like, so check out the Forum link below and answer the questions!

Tip of the Week #6
Jan 26, 2002 RaveZero

This week's (better late than never!) Tip of the Week concerns being prepared, and is written by yours truly:

Arrive Prepared

Nothing kills time worse than arriving to a game unprepared. Save everyone time and patience by creating a checklist of items you’ll need to have on-hand for your CAV games, and go over the checklist before you leave to play.

Your checklist should include at least the following:

  • CAV Rulebook or copy of the rules PDF
  • Force-list with data sheets
  • Sufficient miniatures to fill out force-list
  • Plenty of 10-, 8-, 6-, and 4-sided dice
  • Tape measure
  • Deck of cards
  • While the above are the bare essentials, you might want to include other items in your list of items to bring, such as super-glue (you never know when an arm or missile pod will pop off in transit, or from clumsy handling), something to mark your individual sections (see Tip of the Week #1), drinks and snacks (if playing at a gaming store check with them first to make sure this is acceptable), extra trees and terrain, etc…

    Wow! Great advice, me!

    BatRep Dearth
    Jan 29, 2002 RaveZero

It has recently come to my attention that we haven't had an appropriate Battle Report submitted since August!

I know you guys (and gals, of course) are playing CAV, so why not jot down your game experiences and send them in? Just give us details: Forces used, scenario layout, tactics and strategies used by and against you, etc... turn-by-turn is nice but not necessary.

    Send us your Battle Report!
